Near Horicon Marsh in South Central Wisconsin, I learned of some secluded woods where Great Blue Herons nest. For a few hours one day in the spring, before the trees leafed out, I walked through the woods in amazement. High above, in the tops of the trees, were a few dozen Great Blue Herons and their nests - a rookery! It was eerie and quiet, except for their calls to each other, or their wings flapping, or as small branches broke. It was amazing, awesome, peaceful, and a day I might never forget.
